SOS 5:13 – His cheeks are like a bed of balsam,
Banks of herbal spices;
His lips are lilies
Dripping with drops of myrrh.

This verse comes from one who has walked closely with our Lord and having heard the words of His mouth. This is more than knowing scripture, this is drawing near to the Lord and allowing Him to speak His plans, mysteries, and intimacies to us personally. This is the essence of our faith, personal intimacy with the Lord.
I remember as a young Christian hearing people say that the Lord had spoken to them. I know many today may say that casually or even as an excuse about questionable choices they are making. That is not what this is. If we take time to search for Him in the scriptures and wait upon Him, every Christian can begin to hear His voice. This is not something we should say casually, it is very real and crucial to our spiritual growth. His words become precious to us. These whisperings can be confirmation, instruction, encouragement, prophetic, and even correction. Even correction is sweet coming from the Master’s lips. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this verse.

“His lips are like lilies, not white like lilies, but sweet and pleasant. Such are the words of his lips to all who are sanctified, sweeter than honey and the honeycomb (Ps 19:10); such are the kisses of his lips (1:2), all the expressions of his grace; grace is poured into his lips (Ps 45:2). Those who heard him wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth (Lk 4:22). His lips are as lilies, dropping sweet smelling myrrh (v. 13). Natural lilies do not drop myrrh, but nothing in nature can fully display the beauty and magnificence of Christ, and so, to undertake fitting comparisons, a composite of images must be conceived.”

So here I am again, considering the lilies. Solomon brings us to this special place of intimacy with his description of the Lord’s lips. He says His lips are lilies dripping with myrrh. His words are fragrant, calling us in to a place of fellowship. So consider the lilies, these are special lilies, God’s words spoken over us actually coming from the Lord. Now you can begin to understand what Solomon meant in his famous verse, SOS 5:16 –
“His mouth is most sweet,
Yes, he is altogether lovely.
This is my beloved,
And this is my friend,
O daughters of Jerusalem!”

  1. “With Him I love, in spotless white,
    In glory I shall shine;
    His blissful presence my delight,
    His love and glory mine.

    All taint of sin shall be removed,
    All evil done away;
    And I shall dwell with God’s beloved
    Through Gods eternal day.” Andrew Miller

  2. There exists a meeting place, accessible though diverse. A place where intimacies with our triune God instantly fill and overwhelm us. The place where flesh and blood is introduced to the unseen part of creation present all around us. We have been instructed all the how to’s, ask, seek, and knock and of course Jesus took care of all the other requirements.
