Acts 2:17,18 – AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LAST DAYS,’ God says,
‘THAT I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT ON ALL MANKIND;
AND YOUR SONS AND YOUR DAUGHTERS WILL PROPHESY,
AND YOUR YOUNG MEN WILL SEE VISIONS,
AND YOUR OLD MEN WILL HAVE DREAMS;
AND EVEN ON MY MALE AND FEMALE SERVANTS
I WILL POUR OUT MY SPIRIT IN THOSE DAYS,
And they will prophesy.
The longer I have been a Christian the more vital I believe the power of Pentecost is. It effects our prayer life, private and public worship, ministry, preaching, and in today’s verses we see the connection of Pentecost to prophesy. You could say speaking in tongues is prophetic. Tongues can be personal prayer or a form of prophesy. Both types of tongues flow from the power of Pentecost. I believe prophesy is especially connected to evangelism. Prophesy convinces people of the supernatural nature of Christianity. Here is how the Fire Bible describes the importance of prophesy and its association with tongues.
“Peter associates the speaking in other tongues with prophecy. This means that speaking in other tongues is one form of prophesying, which basically is using one’s voice for the service and glory of God under the direct influence of the Holy Spirit. In the book of Acts: the 120 “were filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues as the Spirit enabled them”, the Holy Spirit came on Cornelius and his household, and Peter “heard them speaking in tongues and praising God”; and the disciples at Ephesus, when “the Holy Spirit came on them, … spoke in tongues and prophesied”. Other signs or expressions of the Spirit through Spirit-filled people include prophetic dreams and visions.”
I often think of how the church in Ephesus started as recorded in Acts 19. Twelve young believers were filled with the Holy Spirit when Paul laid his hands on them. How did Paul know? He knew he because they all spoke in tongues and prophesied. This apparently was the catalyst that caused the explosion of converts in Ephesus. The word spread like fire through the city, new Ephesian Christians were prophesying and speaking in tongues. There was no denying this, the city would respond to this outpouring. Paul conducted daily meetings in Ephesus for over two years, the whole region was effected. I think we are on the verge of this kind of visitation in America. Don’t be ashamed of Pentecost and the gifts of the Spirit, this is the only way we can change our world.
