Gen.43:34 – Then he took portions to them from his own table, but Benjamin’s portion was five times as much as any of theirs. So they drank freely with him.

I love the story of Joseph. It is filled with images of Christ and His blessing on His people even in the darkness of this world. As you know, Joseph had been sold into slavery as a child by His brothers (who does that) and ended up spending many years in Egypt. He was falsely accused and imprisoned for many years. His loyalty to the Lord paid off, Joseph actually became prime minister of Egypt because of the anointing on his life, specifically his ability to interpret dreams. After many years a famine had set in on the region causing Joseph’s brothers to come to Egypt seeking provision. They had no idea Joseph would be there waiting for them. After trips back and forth the brothers found themselves guests in the prime minister’s house (they had no idea that this was Joseph). It was obvious Joseph could not contain himself. Benjamin, Jacob’s only full brother being from the same mother, received five times the portion of food at the table that the other brother’s received. Here is how the Interpreter’s Commentary describes this.

“When the brothers arrive in Egypt, Joseph sees his beloved brother Benjamin and is overcome with emotion as he sets out a feast for his brothers. Although the oldest and firstborn of the brothers would be most honored, Joseph ensures that Benjamin, the youngest of the brothers, receives preferential treatment—five times the food and drink of the other brothers. Once again, the younger is favored over the elder, a prevalent theme throughout Genesis. Joseph also restores Simeon to his brothers.”

As I was reading this I began to see Joseph as a type of Christ. The Father’s blessing is on Him and he pours it out on his younger brothers and sisters. In other words if you are a son of God you have the blessing of Benjamin. You could say that the blessing of Joseph and Benjamin’s great grandfather Abraham was falling on both of them. Today the blessing of Abraham is on me by faith in Christ.

One of the things that this brings to my mind is the importance of the tithe. Abraham taught us to tithe, he said it was connected to the blessing of God. I have learned in my personal life how important tithing is. I have a confidence no matter what is going on because I know God is my provider and He always blesses the tithe.

  1. It is a mystery why the travail of (new) birth is longer for some..but the joy afterward cannot compare to the glory we have seen!!! Even if it’s through a glass darkly..😍😍🤩🤩❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥❤️‍🔥💘💘💘

  2. I am tither since asking Jesus into my heart and life. It does not make life a basket of roses, but can see the horrible result when I do something else with the tithe.
