1 John 4:19 – We love (Him), because He first loved us.
There are as many opinions as there are people when it comes to a move of God. Some say crying, others say laughter; some say repentance, others say not necessary; some say shaking, and others are quite uncomfortable with all of that. You get the point, there are all sorts of spins and twists to what people say a move of God is like. Jonathan Edwards came under fire because of all of the unprecedented happenings going on in his church. He gave an address at Yale University to describe how to know if something was “of God” or not. Here is a short blurb.
“Therefore when the Spirit that is at work amongst a people, tends this Way, and brings many of them to high and exalting Thoughts of the divine Being, and his glorious Perfections; and works in them an admiring, delightful Sense of the Excellency of Jesus Christ; representing Him as the chief among ten Thousands, altogether lovely, and makes him precious to the Soul; winning and drawing the Heart with those Motives and Incitements to Love, which the Apostle speaks of in that Passage of Scripture we are upon, viz. the wonderful, free Love of God in giving his only begotten Son to die for us, and the wonderful dying Love of Christ to us, who had no Love to him, but were his Enemies; as “In this was manifested the Love of God towards us, because that God sent his only begotten Son into the World, that we might live through him. Herein is Love; not that we loved God, but that he loved us, and sent his Son to be the Propitiation for our Sins.”
If you didn’t quite catch what Edwards is saying you can boil it down to this, is Jesus magnified in the lives of the participants. Are the people being influenced by the outpouring talking about Jesus and His work, are they excited about His word, are they gathering together with other Christians for worship? All of these things are characteristic of a move of the Spirit of God. There were a lot of skeptics that had their doubts about the Jesus Movement of the 1970’s. The true test is what is the lasting fruit in their lives? Jesus Himself said that, “You will know them by their fruit”. So if you want to check out what some are claiming as a move of God have a look at the fruit. If lives are being changed for the good and Jesus is the center of the discussion just relax and enjoy a fresh move of the Spirit of God.
