Eph.3:20 Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]—

This is one of those “somewhere over the rainbow” too good to be true promises. Of course we know in theory that God can do whatever He wants without limitation. The thing that trips us up is will He really do these kinds of things for me. That’s where we have to reflect on the previous parts of Paul’s prayer. Paul made it very clear that He loves us beyond measure and sought each of us out of the depths of misery and depravity to reveal His grace in us and to us. If He really loves me there is nothing He won’t do. Here is how Adam Clarke describes this great passage.

“It is impossible to express the full meaning of these words, God is omnipotent, therefore he is able to do all things superabundantly above the greatest abundance. And who can doubt this, who has any rational or Scriptural views of his power or his love? All that we ask or think We can ask every good of which we have heard, every good which God has promised in his word; and we can think of, or imagine, goods and blessings beyond all that we have either read of or seen: yea, we can imagine good things to which it is impossible for us to give a name; we can go beyond the limits of all human descriptions; we can imagine more than even God has specified in his word; and can feel no bounds to our imagination of good, but impossibility and eternity: and after all, God is able to do more for us than we can ask or think…”

This is what we see in some of His miracles, the excessive over the top nature of what He does. Walking on water, sinking fishing boats with an unprecedented catch, feeding thousands with a little boy’s lunch; these are the over and above things He loves to do. The part of this passage that really hits me is this; “by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us”. All of this over and above stuff happens because of and in proportion to His power at work in us. Settle into His love, soak in His presence, maybe one of those too good to be true days is about to happen for you.
