Lk.4:16-18 – “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me,

Because He has anointed Me

To preach the gospel to the poor;

He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,

To proclaim liberty to the captives

And recovery of sight to the blind,

To set at liberty those who are oppressed;

To proclaim the acceptable year of the LORD.”

Jesus was declaring that the fulfillment of Jubilee was here as He began His public ministry. Today we can take and apply these promises to our own lives as we take them by faith. Let’s have a look at these six proclamations that Jesus is making over each of us today.

1. GOSPEL TO THE POOR – BEGGARS – PUBLIC MENDICANT

One of the big challenges in all of our lives is simply provision. The first declaration at Jubilee was good news for the poor, the curse of poverty is broken through the power of the cross and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Jubilee is here, the blessing of God is upon our finances.

2. HEAL THE BROKEN HEARTED – HEART BROKEN TO PIECES BY DISAPPOINTMENTS

All of us have had disappointments and have tasted the bitter taste of dreams that have been crushed and never come to fruition. Jesus is announcing that the heart broken by disappointment is being healed by the power of the Spirit. How is your heart healed? By the touch of God and the sudden fulfillment of God’s promises and your dreams.

3. LIBERTY TO THE CAPTIVES – THOSE HELD AT SPEAR POINT – CAPTURED BY THE ENEMY

The enemy has captured many of us and held us as his slave by the power of sin and oftentimes through addictive behavior. It is as if we are held at the point of a spear by our enemy. Jesus is announcing today that your time of slavery is past, the captives are now set free.

4. RECOVERY OF SIGHT TO THE BLIND – HEALING FOR THE SICK

The ministry of Jesus was always made up of healing for those who were sick; Jesus hasn’t changed. He is still healing all who come to Him by the power of the Holy Spirit.

5. LIBERTY TO THE OPPRESSED – THOSE WHO ARE BRUISED AND BEAT UP

The circumstances of life have a way of leaving us bruised and battered on the side of the road. Maybe you feel that way, the troubles of life have beat you up. Jesus has come and is pouring His healing oil on all who come to Him.

6. PROCLAIM THE ACCEPTABLE YEAR -THE BLESSING AND FAVOR OF GOD

That day in the synagogue in Nazareth Jesus was declaring that the acceptable year of the Lord had come. He was not talking about a specific year but the time of God’s Jubilee. Jubilee is here, the favor of the Lord is pouring on His sons and daughters.
