Lam 3:22-24 – Through the LORD’s mercies we are not consumed,
Because His compassions fail not.
They are new every morning;
Great is Your faithfulness.
“The LORD is my portion,” says my soul,
“Therefore I hope in Him!”
This passage stands out as a shining light in the midst of one of the darkest moments in the history of Israel. The nation of Israel has fallen, the temple has been torn down, the people have been taken into slavery in a foreign land yet Jeremiah is prophesying about the goodness of God and His mercies that never fail. The CWSB Dictionary defines His mercies like this, “God’s kindness and faithfulness serves as the foundation for His actions and His character: it underlies His goodness…”. The word compassion is the word rachab. This word refers to the love of a mom for her children from her womb. His mercies and compassion for us are constant and will hold us close in the darkest moments of life. His love for us never fails. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this passage.
“That God’s compassions fail not; they really do not fail, not even when he seems in his anger to have shut up his tender mercies. These rivers of mercy flow fully and constantly and never run dry. No; they are new every morning. Every morning we have fresh instances of God’s compassion toward us; he comes to us every morning with them; every morning does he bring his judgment to light. When our strength fails, God’s compassion does not….That God is and always will be the all-sufficient happiness of his people, and they have chosen him and depend on him to be this: The LORD is my portion, saith my soul; that is: “While I have a relationship with God, I have enough; I have what is sufficient to balance out all my troubles and make up for all my losses. Whatever we may be robbed of, our portion remains safe.”
This is one of the most amazing promises in the entire Bible, His mercies are new every morning. This is true because His mercy is eternal and His compassion is constant. He loves us completely and eternally. The Lord is good and His mercy endures forever. So what kind of troubles are you facing? The Lord will not only see you through it, He will come to you again and again and be your portion throughout your trouble. Look to Him this morning, His mercies are new for you today.
