Ps.52:8,9 – But I am like a green olive tree in the house of God;

I trust in the mercy of God forever and ever.

I will praise You forever,

Because You have done it;

And in the presence of Your saints

I will wait on Your name, for it is good.

David lived much of his life on the run. He ran from the Philistines, from Saul, and even his son Absalom. Because of his relationship to the Lord and dependence on the anointing he had learned to draw oil from the Rock no matter what was he was facing. Here are some comments from Spurgeon on why David saw himself as a green olive tree.

But I, hunted and persecuted though I am, am like a green olive tree. I am not plucked up or destroyed, but am like a flourishing olive, which out of the rock draws oil, and amid the drought still lives and grows. In the house of God. He was one of the divine family, and could not be expelled from it; his place was near his God, and there was he safe and happy, despite all the machinations of his foes. He was bearing fruit, and would continue to do so when all his proud enemies were withered like branches lopped from the tree. I trust in the mercy of God for ever and ever. Eternal mercy is my present confidence. David knew God’s mercy to be eternal and perpetual, and in that he trusted. What a rock to build on! What a fortress to fly to!”

Here are some of my observations on this passage

1. EVEN IN TIMES OF TROUBLE I DRAW OIL FROM THE ROCK

This is the beauty of Christ being in me and me in Him, I draw the anointing oil from the Rock no matter what my circumstances are. The anointing always sustains and empowers me.

2. I AM ONE OF THE DIVINE FAMILY IN GOD’S HOUSE

I am planted in the house of God. I am in His house because I am His son. My sonship gives me great assurance and a confidence that all of His resources are at my disposal.

3. LIFE FLOWS FROM THE HOUSE OF GOD

Ezekiel saw a river flowing out from the house of God. Everywhere this river goes there is healing and there is life.

Our fruitfulness and protection come from our relationship with the Lord and His house. I am drawing oil from the Rock, planted in the house of God.
