Lk.2:8-12 – Now there were in the same country shepherds living out in the fields, keeping watch over their flock by night. And behold, an angel of the Lord stood before them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were greatly afraid. Then the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
Good tidings of great joy, this was the greatest news of all time. There had been glimpses of this day from the prophets from days long ago. There was the prophesies about the seed of a woman, the Desire of all ages, Immanuel, the promised Son, and the Sun of Righteousness but all of those promises had stopped centuries ago. This silence was finally broken by the word of an angel. Today I will reflect on the third verse of my 2023 Christmas poem.
WORD
THE PROMISE IS SPOKEN
THE LONG SILENCE IS BROKEN
HEARTS ARE AWAKENED
GOD’S WORD HAS COME NEAR
This promise was being fulfilled even as it was spoken. The virgin was giving birth to her son God’s Son, the very Son of God. God’s words carry the guarantee of fulfillment within them, now the Word had become a human being. The longest silent night was finally over, no prophetic promises for four hundred years had taken its toll on God’s people. The silence was over and His word was now among us. God’s words carry the very revelation of God within them. The shepherds hearts were set aflame that night by the word of the angel. Thousands of years later the word still awakens our hearts, the Savior has been born in the City of David. He is Christ the Lord, today those words still reverberate in every heart that has ears to hear. It had seemed for so long that God was far off, uninvolved in our daily lives. Maybe you feel that way today, it seems that He is far off from you and unconcerned. Let the word of the angel change all of that, God has come near, the Savior has been born. Actually He was born in Bethlehem for you.
