LEARNING HOW TO DRINK #1

Jn.7:37-39 – On the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink. He who believes in Me, as the Scripture has said, out of his heart will flow rivers of living water.” But this He spoke concerning the Spirit, whom those believing in Him would receive; for the Holy Spirit was not yet given, because Jesus was not yet glorified.

Today and tomorrow my daily blog will be a little different than normal. Each day I will start with a passage from John that describes drinking in living water. Drinking is another way to describe receiving which for many Christians is something they just don’t quite understand. Several years ago I discovered that I had forgotten how to take in or drink the Holy Spirit. After receiving a mighty visitation from the Lord I discovered the value of drinking. I want to share with you the ways I have learned how to receive from the Lord.

The first way I drink is my praying in the Spirit in a receiving mode. This is the verse that comes to mind when I think about drinking while praying in tongues.

1 Cor.14:2 – For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

Praying in the Spirit is intended to be a language of intimacy that you share with the Lord. Pray in tongues daily for extended periods of time with a mindset of worship rather than intercession. This is a great way to drink His presence.

Next is in worshipping the Lord. Worship is not just about singing, it is a God focused mindset where we magnify the Lord with a song. David said it like this.

Ps.63:3-5 – Because Your lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips shall praise You.
Thus I will bless You while I live;
I will lift up my hands in Your name.
My soul shall be satisfied as with marrow and fatness,
And my mouth shall praise You with joyful lips.

I like to put on good worship music and just do nothing. Spending time in that atmosphere can bring you into His presence. I love to call this soaking; soaking is a lost art for many Christians.
This brings us to drinking God in by saturating in the Word of God. Jesus is the Word of God and when we create a lifestyle of reading the scripture daily we can bring ourselves into a place of receiving. This is not about just learning but meeting Christ in the scripture. Here is how Jesus describes this.

Jn.15:3,4 – You are already clean because of the word which I have spoken to you. Abide in Me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in Me.

Take some time today and seek the Lord in His Word. Drinking from the scripture is life changing.
