GOD’S GIFTS AND CALLING ARE IRREVOCABLE

Rom.11:28-32 – From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers; for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable. For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience, so these also now have been disobedient, that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy. For God has shut up all in disobedience so that He may show mercy to all.

Paul has returned again and again to his message of election. The obvious reason is because election is the end game of God’s love. He has loved those who belong to Him from eternity and refuses to give up on them. The children of Israel are collectively God’s chosen people. The problem that Paul had to deal with is that many of the Jewish population rejected their Messiah and the message of salvation through Him alone. Paul was set apart by the Lord to open the Gentile world to salvation that was being offered to whosoever would call upon the Name of Jesus. Paul was obviously torn, his heart was grieved by the spiritual plight of the Jewish people. This word was a great encouragement to Paul, “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable”. He knew that there would be a future harvest among the people of Israel. Here is how the ESV Expository Commentary describes this.

“One reason for God’s unwavering commitment is that “the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.” “Gifts” would include the countless promises made to his people and the blessings extended to them going back to Abraham and even before, to Noah and to Adam and Eve in the garden….. The “calling of God” is his summons that brought Israel into being. But it is not only a common call; this call translates into an awareness, arising in people called to faith, of the presence of God and their responsibility to respond. There is a particular call to faith in Christ through the call of the gospel. Both God’s gifts and his calling of Jews to faith in Christ remain in force and will not be revoked.”

It seems that the Lord is orchestrating the events in these last days so that this word will be fulfilled. Israel is being prepared for their great day of salvation, the world is about to be shocked by the plan of God. The current pandemic of Jewish hatred will be used by the Lord to fulfill His plans, the hearts of the people of Israel are being prepared to turn to their Messiah for a place of refuge.
