WHERE IS YOUR FAITH

Luke 8:22-25 – Now on one of those days Jesus and His disciples got into a boat, and He said to them, “Let’s cross over to the other side of the lake.” So they launched out. But as they were sailing along He fell asleep; and a fierce gale of wind descended on the lake, and they began to be swamped and to be in danger. They came up to Jesus and woke Him, saying, “Master, Master, we are perishing!” And He got up and rebuked the wind and the surging waves, and they stopped, and it became calm. And He said to them, “Where is your faith?” But they were fearful and amazed, saying to one another, “Who then is this, that He commands even the winds and the water, and they obey Him?”

This is a story about real life, you know the kind of life that is never quite perfect and often has unexpected storms showing up suddenly out of nowhere. Jesus had given instructions to cross the lake and He was going to take the opportunity to catch some sleep knowing there would be drama on the other shore. The next thing you know the wind and waves were picking up and apparently the boat was about to sink. This seems a little strange with a boat full of experienced fishermen but apparently this was not the average storm. Someone got the courage to wake Jesus up and one word from His mouth and the wind and waves quieted down. That’s when He asked them the question, “Where is your faith?” It’s quite a funny situation if you step back and think about it, the creator of storms was on the boat, how could you possibly be afraid? Here is how Albert Barnes describes the scene.

“You should have remembered that the Son of God, the Messiah, was on board. You should not have forgotten that he had power to save, and that with him you are safe. So Christians should never fear danger, disease, or death. With Jesus they are safe. No enemy can reach him; and as he is safe, so they shall be also.”

So maybe the wind and waves have been pounding away in your world, if that is the case there is really only one thing you need to be sure of. Make sure you have Jesus on the boat with you. If you do everything is going to be just fine.
