Ps.145:1 – I will exalt You, my God, the King,
And I will bless Your name forever and ever.
It’s important to understand who wrote this Psalm, these words coming from David – the King of Israel – take on a whole new connotation. David new what it meant to have servants and armies at his command. His words and his decisions carried final authority throughout the land. David was feared and loved because of his position and because of who he was. But today’s verse gives us a look into David’s greatness. He new who the true king was and he worshipped and followed him. David’s Psalms were filled with the revelation of the humanity of the coming Savior and King of kings. Thomas Le Blanc described it like this.
“The Psalmist in rapt ecstasy seems as though he saw God incarnate in Christ present to inspire his praise. Christ is our God and King, to be extolled in the heart, with the mouth, and by the life.”
David saw the mystery of godliness by revelation, he saw the coming King as human and as God. Here is how the Christ Centered Exposition Commentary describes this.
“He (David) gives an awe-inspiring description of both the greatness of God and the goodness of God, who is our King. We see a mingling of God’s majesty and grace, righteousness and kindness, kingship and fatherly generosity. Indeed, the wonder of this psalm revolves around David’s vision of God, not his use of the Hebrew alphabet! The tone is set in verse 1. David, an earthly king, recognizes that ultimately there’s only one King. The power and sovereignty of earthly kings is limited, but God the King reigns over all. The glory of earthly kings is fleeting, but God’s glory endures “forever and ever.” Consequently, it’s fitting to exalt God and to bless his name now and forever. These expressions of praise are the first of many in this psalm. David’s personal praise is intended to stir up others to do the same.”
It changes our world when we see Jesus as our King. We know He is good and merciful and with a glimpse of His sovereign rule as King of the Universe it settles all the drama down in my life. I may not understand everything and sometimes the world can be quite a terrifying place but I will worship and exalt Jesus as my King. He is seated at the Father’s right hand ruling the universe with His powerful words.
