Jn.9:6,7 – Then Jesus spat on the ground and made some clay with his saliva. Then he anointed the blind man’s eyes with the clay. And he said to the blind man, “Now go and wash the clay from your eyes in the ritual pool of Siloam.” So he went and washed his face and as he came back, he could see for the first time in his life!
The miracles of Jesus could come away as strange to the natural man who is too many times a casual observer. It’s almost like Jesus would go out of His way to offend people at times. In this scenario Jesus provided two great opportunities for someone to walk away with the wrong idea. First of all Jesus spat on this blind man’s eyes, it probably wasn’t the first time this blind man had been spit on. Think about it, beggars can sometimes get angry responses, spitting would not be out of the question. Next Jesus told this blind man to go and wash his eyes off in the Pool of Siloam, he must have thought something like, “wouldn’t it be easier for Jesus just to pray for me?” Nevertheless, to the pool this blind man went. Of course he came away seeing after he washed in the Pool of Siloam, this miracle of opening the eyes of the blind is a picture of why Jesus became a man, He came to open all of our eyes from the darkness of this world. Here is how Brian Simmons describes this moment.
“In the context of Jesus’ teaching on the light of the world and mankind being in the dark, this miracle of giving sight to the blind man is a powerful proof of Jesus’ words. Christ, in his birth, became a man of clay. When he applies this clay over our eyes and we wash in the water of his Word, our spiritual sight is restored.”
So maybe one of the things the Lord was declaring about the Father and the way He works in this passage is just this, don’t get hung up on Him working a certain way. He often does things in very unexpected ways. What do I mean? Well things like the Savior being born in a stable with farm animals, or saving us by Roman crucifixion, or even starting His church with tongues of fire and several thousand people speaking in unknown languages. You have to admit, the Lord is not very predictable. Maybe He wants to do something different in you today, if He does it will probably be way different than you expect.
