Jn.4:7 – A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, “Give Me a drink.”
This seems to be such an unusual request, the creator of rivers, rain, lakes, and oceans is asking this Samaritan woman for a drink. What an amazing look into the humility of our Lord, He experienced thirst as a human to identify with us. Here is how Mathew Henry describes this.
“Jesus began with a modest request for a drink of water: Give me to drink. The One who for our sakes became poor here became a beggar. Christ asked for it not only because he needed it and needed her help to reach it but also because he wanted to draw her on to further conversation. Christ is still begging by way of his poor members, and a cup of cold water given to them in his name will not lose its reward.”
But it seems that there is something else behind this request from our Lord. Was He really “thirsty” for something more? I believe He was crying out for fallen man, even going beyond the land of the Jews, longing to see all of us come and have fellowship with Him. Here is a quote from the Passion Notes followed by a quote from Augustine that describes this longing of our Lord.
“The “water” Jesus wanted was the refreshing, satisfying pleasure of her devotion. He says to each one of us, “Nothing satisfies me except you.” The sinner drank of the Savior and the Savior drank of the sinner and both were satisfied. Neither ate or drank, but both were satisfied.”
Augustine: “His “drink” was to do the will of him that sent him. That was why he said, “I thirst; give me to drink,” namely, to work faith in her and to drink of her faith and transplant her into his own body, for his body is the church.”
The Lord is drawing anyone who has ears to hear to come and have a drink of this living water. Maybe today He is calling out to you saying, “Come and give Me a drink”. I think that was one of the most shocking things for me when I first was encountered by this wonderful Lord. He wanted a drink from me, He wanted my devotion and affection because He knew that was the place where I would change.
