Acts 2:1-4 – When the Day of Pentecost had fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting. Then there appeared to them divided tongues, as of fire, and one sat upon each of them.
The fire of God is seen all throughout the scripture. We see the fire of God in the burning bush, the pillar of fire in the wilderness journey, the fire that fell at the temple dedication, and even the fiery chariot that caught up Elijah. On the Day of Pentecost this pillar of fire fell and then divided and rested upon each believer in the gathering. Apparently the fire of God is connected to the baptism in the Holy Spirit. Here is how the Passion Translation Notes describe this.
“This was the pillar of fire that led Israel from bondage into the promised land. The same pillar of fire manifested here to initiate a new beginning from dead religious structures into the powerful life of the Spirit. Each believer received an overpowering flame of fire, signified by the shaft of light that engulfed them. It was as though each one received his own personal pillar of fire that would empower him and lead him throughout his life. This was the promise Jesus gave to his disciples of “the one like me” (John 14:26), who would be sent by the Father and never leave them. Today every believer is indwelt by the Spirit of Christ (Rom. 8:9). This was the birthday of the church of Jesus Christ. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.”
What is the significance of the fire of God? When I think of God’s fire I think of cleansing, revelation, spiritual passion, guidance, and assimilation. God’s fire cleanses us every time we step into His presence. This is critical in the filthy generation we live in. The fire of God gives us revelation, we understand the scripture and the world we live in by the light coming from the fire of God. God’s fire awakens and enflames our love for Him and for lost souls. This reminds us of the seraphim, the burning ones that are in the very presence of God. God’s fire brings light to our steps. Just as God’s fire led the children of Israel through the wilderness, God’s fire leads us. Finally, fire assimilates. The fire of God assimilates us, transforms us, to be like Him. Everything that is touched by God’s fire begins to take on the image of Christ. God’s fire is falling on His church, step in and be transformed.
