HE LOOKED UP INTO HEAVEN

Matt.14:19 – TPT – Then he had everyone sit down on the grass as he took the five loaves and two fish. He looked up into heaven, gave thanks to God, and broke the bread into pieces. He then gave it to his disciples, who in turn gave it to the crowds.

“He looked up into heaven”, that describes the power of Jesus of Nazareth. It all started that day when Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by the prophet John the Baptist. As Jesus came up out of the water the Holy Spirit came upon Him equipping Him with supernatural power to perform His appointed ministry. From that day signs and wonders were constant, Jesus was receiving power from heaven. That explains to us that moment when He took the little boy’s lunch into His hand and looked up into heaven, He only did the things the Father told Him to do. Here is how Spurgeon describes this moment.

“Now that all is in order, the divine Lord takes the slender provision into his blessed hands. By a simple sign he teaches the people whence to expect gracious supplies: “Looking up to heaven.” Not without a blessing does the al fresco meal begin: “He blessed.” God’s blessing must be sought even when Jesus is there: He will not act without the Father. Our Lord Jesus did all in the provision of the feast: he blessed, he brake, he gave to his disciples. All is with him…. What a feast was this! Christ for Master of the feast: apostles for butlers; thousands for numbers; and miracles for supplies! What a far more glorious feast is that which the gospel spreads for hungry souls! What a privilege to be fed by the Son of God!”

This moment, with the fish and bread in Jesus’ hands, and the Lord looking into heaven shows us how to live our lives. Without Him we are stuck with the meager provision of the day, just some fish and bread. Looking into heaven brings the supernatural power of God in the arena. Looking into heaven has to be our daily life, it is not I but Christ. He wins the lost, He heals the sick, and He breaks the chains of sin and addiction. Of course He uses people to be His instruments in these endeavors, but it will certainly be those who have learned the steady gaze. Look into heaven and watch Him change your world.
