HOW TO RECEIVE THE ANOINTING

Jn.7:37-39 – Then on the most important day of the feast, the last day, Jesus stood and shouted out to the crowds—“All you thirsty ones, come to me! Come to me and drink! Believe in me so that rivers of living water will burst out from within you, flowing from your innermost being, just like the Scripture says!”

Jesus was prophesying about the Holy Spirit that believers were being prepared to receive. But the Holy Spirit had not yet been poured out upon them, because Jesus had not yet been unveiled in his full splendor.

The first conclusion you have to come to is that there is never an end to receiving the anointing. The reason is because of the nature of the anointing, you could say that the anointing is a person, the wonderful third person of the Trinity, the anointing is the Holy Spirit. Now since that is absolutely true then the anointing is infinite upon infinite, because of His intimate nature you can never get to the end of Him. We will still be captured by this adventure when we step into our heavenly inheritance. The Holy Spirit is our heavenly inheritance and we will be entranced by His beauty for eternity.

So wherever you are in respect to receiving the anointing on your life for the first time or whether you are looking to step into a lifestyle of increasing the anointing all of us need to receive the anointing upon our lives again and again.

I came to this conclusion back in 1994 when I heard about people in various places being filled with the anointing of the Holy Spirit. After attending services that were absolutely saturated with the presence of God I begin to see what my problem was. Over the years of ministry I had become entrenched in a ‘doing’ lifestyle. Somehow I had forgotten how to receive from the Lord. In today’s scripture passage Jesus describes this. First, Jesus said you have to be thirsty in order to receive. Next, you simply come to Jesus in His place of glory at the right hand of the Father and magnify Him. Coming to Jesus thirsty and in humility is where it all begins. Drinking, receiving His presence, is the place where the anointing will fall on us and begin to work in us and through us. Jesus said come to Him and drink, in the Greek text the word drink is continuous, in other words drink and keep drinking. How long? We will drink God in all the rest of our lives.
