DAVID’S SON OR GOD’S SON

Matt.22:44,45 – The Lord said to my Lord,

“Sit at my right hand,

until I put your enemies under your feet”’?

If then David calls him Lord, how is he his son?”

This is one of the greatest prophecies in God’s word. David himself had referred to the Messiah as his son and in the same breath referred to Him as the Son of God. This was the passage Jesus quoted to the Pharisees, the Messiah was in front of them and they could see neither David’s son or God’s Son. That’s the way it is with spiritual blindness, it is impossible to grasp divine revelation without the Lord opening our eyes. Jesus was the son of David by his biological birth from Mary, He is the Son of God by being God’s only begotten Son. Here is how Augustine described this mystery.

“Here then there is need for caution, lest Christ himself be thought to have denied that he was the Son of David. He did not deny that he was the Son of David, but he probed his detractors on the particular way this can be. You have said that Christ is the Son of David. I do not deny it. But “if David thus calls him Lord, how is he his Son?” Tell me how he could be his son who is also his Lord? They did not answer him but were dumbfounded.

Christ is both David’s Son and David’s Lord. David’s Lord always; David’s Son in time. David’s Lord, begotten of the substance of his Father; David’s Son, born of the Virgin Mary, conceived by the Holy Ghost. Let us hold fast both. The one of them will be our eternal habitation; the other is our deliverance from our present exile.”

I love this last statement from Augustine, as the Son of God He is our eternal home, He is in us and we are in Him. As the son of David He delivered us from our sin. The Son of God took on a human body, born from the Virgin Mary, descended from King David, to be a sin offering. He redeemed us because of His humanity. This is the blessed mystery of our Christian faith, God became a man and dwelt among us, we have tasted His glory and our lives are changed. This was the mystery Jesus was trying to share with the Pharisees, their own pride and preconceived ideas just got in their way.

  1. “their own pride and preconceived ideas just got in their way.”
What a terrible but true statement, this reminds me of a word I no longer use, religion, which I now define as the above statement. This goes along with Matt 13: 24-30 & 36-43 about weeds allowed to grow for a time along side the wheat. After a season, the weeds were removed and burned and the wheat alone was gathered into the masters barn.
