John 1:16 – And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.
Grace is just another word until you experience it for yourself. Grace overcomes our sins and delivers us from our own pitiful efforts. Grace awakens us, pardons us, justifies us, sanctifies us, and empowers us. Some say grace is unmerited favor, I say it is that and so much more. Grace not only accepts us but makes us acceptable. Grace not only justifies it absolutely sanctifies. Grace is like God, infinite upon infinite. No wonder John called it grace upon grace, when John wrote those words he had been drinking from God’s cup of grace for as much as seventy years. His grace is absolutely amazing. Here is how the prince of preachers, Charles Spurgeon describes grace.
“His gifts are beyond measure precious, and are as freely given as the light of the sun. He gives grace to his elect because he wills it, to his redeemed because of his covenant, to the called because of his promise, to believers because they seek it, to sinners because they need it. He gives grace abundantly, seasonably, constantly, readily, sovereignly; doubly enhancing the value of the boon by the manner of its bestowal. Grace in all its forms he freely renders to his people: comforting, preserving, sanctifying, directing, instructing, assisting grace, he generously pours into their souls without ceasing, and he always will do so, whatever may occur. Sickness may befall, but the Lord will give grace; poverty may happen to us, but grace will surely be afforded; death must come but grace will light a candle at the darkest hour. Reader, how blessed it is as years roll round, and the leaves begin again to fall, to enjoy such an unfading promise as this, The Lord will give grace.”
So no matter how deep is the pit in which you have fallen His grace is deeper still. No matter how high is the mountain that stands against you His grace reaches beyond the heavens. No matter how wide the expanse seems to be that separates you from His promises His grace is wider still. His grace is like His love, it is without measure. Over fifty years ago I first tasted of His grace and it changed everything about me. It changed my passions and it changed my purpose. After all these years I haven’t scratched the surface of this grace that changed me, sustained me, satisfied me, and has kept in all of my circumstances. I have to agree with John, of His fullness I have received and it is grace upon grace upon grace.
