John 20:30,31 – And truly Jesus did many other signs in the presence of His disciples, which are not written in this book; but these are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that believing you may have life in His name.
I love the miracles recorded in the gospel of John. We see Jesus turning water into wine, multiplying fish and bread to feed a hungry crowd, walking on water to save His disciples in a storm, raising Lazarus from the dead, and healing a blind man and a paralyzed man as well. These are amazing miracles and John said that he wrote about them so that we would believe that Jesus is the Son of God. Jesus said it Himself when he told Martha and Mary He would raise Lazarus from the dead. He declared that He was the Resurrection and the Life. All of this is a proclamation that Jesus is the Son of God. Here is what the Reformed Expository Commentary says about this.
“The miracles that John records bear testimony to Jesus’ deity, since they cannot be accounted for in any other way. The One who could turn water into wine must be the Lord of the harvest. Jesus said that the man born blind had lived in that state so “that the works of God might be displayed in him” (John 9:3), and it was Jesus’ works that were glorified when the man was given sight. Most impressively, Jesus claimed deity for himself when he told grieving Martha, “I am the resurrection and the life” (11:25). It might be easy to make such a claim, but only God could then stand before the tomb where dead Lazarus had lain for four days, call out his name, and see him emerge alive from the grave. John revealed these and all the other signs of his Gospel so that we might be persuaded that Jesus is the Son of God.”
So this is why I love the gospel of John, in it we see the eternal nature of the Son of God displayed clearly and without question in a man. Jesus is the One Who has lived from eternity with His Father. He became a man to display the glory of God and to save us from our sins. Jesus is the Christ, the only Son of God, and believing in Him brings us into God’s eternal life.
