WOUNDS OF JESUS

John 20:26-28 – And after eight days His disciples were again inside, and Thomas with them. Jesus came, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and said, “Peace to you!” Then He said to Thomas, “Reach your finger here, and look at My hands; and reach your hand here, and put it into My side. Do not be unbelieving, but believing.” And Thomas answered and said to Him, “My Lord and my God!”

The resurrected Christ displayed clearly the supernatural nature of Jesus as the Son of God and at the same time showed His humanity. Obviously Jesus was alive, the fact that He had risen from the dead displayed the supernatural nature of the Son of God yet at the same time He was a man. He showed them His physical body that still carried the wounds in His brow, in His hands and feet, and the hole in His side where the soldier had pierced Him with a sword. He also ate with the disciples in a later meeting in His resurrected state. Jesus was showing His deity and His humanity in His resurrection glory. Here is how Charles Spurgeon describes this.

“What was to be seen on Christ’s hands and feet? We are taught that the prints of the nails were visible, and that in his side there was still the gash of the spear. For did he not say to Thomas? “Reach hither thy finger and behold my hands, and reach hither thy hand and thrust it into my side, and be not faithless, but believing.” I wish to draw your attention to the ample fact, that our Lord Jesus Christ, when he rose again from the dead had in his body the marks of his passion. If he had pleased he could readily have removed them. He rose again from the dead, and he might have erased from his body everything which could be an indication of what he had suffered and endured before he descended into the tomb. But, no! Instead thereof, there were the pierced hands and feet, and there was the open side.”

His wounds are an eternal reminder of His love for us displayed by His death. In eternity we will see the scars on His brow and remember how He broke our curse. We will witness the scars in His back where He was scourged and remember that our bodies are whole (especially in eternity) because by His stripes we were healed. The nail prints in His hands and feet tell us about forgiveness of sins and eternal life with Him. So go ahead and take a look at His wounds by faith, one glimpse and you will see the favor of God on your life purchased by the wounds of Jesus.
