CAPTAIN MY CAPTAIN

Heb.2:5-10 – For He has not put the world to come, of which we speak, in subjection to angels. But one testified in a certain place, saying:

“What is man that You are mindful of him,

Or the son of man that You take care of him?

You have made him a little lower than the angels;

You have crowned him with glory and honor,

And set him over the works of Your hands.

You have put all things in subjection under his feet.”

For in that He put all in subjection under him, He left nothing that is not put under him. But now we do not yet see all things put under him. But we see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, for the suffering of death crowned with glory and honor, that He, by the grace of God, might taste death for everyone. For it was fitting for Him, for whom are all things and by whom are all things, in bringing many sons to glory, to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.

Everyone is looking for someone to follow and lead them to a better life. Today’s title, ‘Oh Captain My Captain’, is a poem written by Walt Whitman about Abraham Lincoln. Of course Lincoln was one of our greatest presidents and led our nation out of its darkest hour. Through his efforts slavery ended in America and began a new age for our nation. Today’s verse describes Jesus as our Captain. He led us out of slavery to sin into His kingdom of light and life. The word used for captain is archegos which means – “Originator, founder, leader, chief, first, prince, as distinguished from simply being the cause. One may be the cause of something but not the beginning” from the CWSB Dictionary. Of course Jesus is superior to any other captain in this life. He is the beginning of life being the Creator and our human leader since He took on a human body.

So where exactly is our Captain leading us? He has led us out of the dark world of sin, forgave us all for our filthy lives and lifestyle, and has made us sons and daughters of God. Our ultimate destination? It is to be clothed with Him in glory for eternity. Look to your Captain, the founder and finisher of your faith, He is leading you into His glory for His glory. Oh Captain My Captain I will follow you all the days of my life.
