HE SPOKE AND IT WAS DONE

Ps.33:9 – For He spoke, and it was done; He commanded, and it stood fast.

This verse describes the power and sovereignty of the Word of God. He spoke and it was done. One word from the Master’s lips set creation in motion. The farthest reaches of the universe were established the moment His word was spoken. In all of our scientific discoveries and advancements of our day we cannot but touch the edge of all that He has created. There are remote parts of the earth that man is still exploring, how much more the depths of the galaxies in places far away. The next part of today’s verse is just as shocking; He commanded and it stood fast. Not only has all creation come from His word it is also sustained and held together by His word. He is truly ruling all things by His power. Everything from the blizzards of the arctic regions to the deserts of Africa the Lord rules every snowflake and every grain of sand. All of it is directed by His mighty power. Here is how Spurgeon describes this passage.

“For he spake, and it was done. Creation was the fruit of a word. Jehovah said, “Light be, “and light was. The Lord’s acts are sublime in their ease and instantaneousness. “What a word is this?” This was the wondering enquiry of old, and it may be ours to this day. He commanded, and it stood fast. Out of nothing creation stood forth, and was confirmed in existence. The same power which first uplifted, now makes the universe to abide; although we may not observe it, there is as great a display of sublime power in confirming as in creating. Happy is the man who has learned to lean his all upon the sure word of him who built the skies!”

When Jesus was ministering as a man on earth He displayed the power of His word. He calmed the storms by His word, He cast out demons by His word, He healed the sick by His word, and He raised the dead back to life by His word. Paul said that Jesus is ruling the universe with His word as He is seated at the right hand of the Father. Here is the best part of all of this, He has my life firmly in place by the power of His word. He speaks His Word over me and it is done.
