Matt.17:5 – While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice from the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to Him!”
Listen to Him! Jesus has the words of eternal life. It is His words that attracts us, His words that convict us of sin, His words that give us new birth, His words that transform us, His words that heal us, His words that deliver us, and His words that direct and guide every part of our lives. When the crowds turned away from Jesus He asked the disciples if they would leave too; Peter answered, “Where can we go?” Peter responded, “You have the words of eternal life”. The Father is still speaking from heaven today, “Listen to My Son”, He pleads. How can a person hear the words of Jesus? He is not here physically, how can we hear Him? Discovering the power of the written word, the Bible, is life changing. His word is alive and when we turn to Him and search the scripture He speaks to us. Listen to Him, He is speaking today. Here are some comments from Leo the Great from about 400 A.D. about this passage.
“A voice from the cloud said, This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him. I am manifested through his preaching. I am glorified through his humility. So listen to him without hesitation. He is the truth and the life. He is my strength and wisdom. “Listen to him” whom the mysteries of the law foreshadowed, of whom the mouths of the prophets sang. “Listen to him” who by his blood redeemed the world, who binds the devil and seizes his vessels, who breaks the debt of sin and the bondage of iniquity. “Listen to him” who opens the way to heaven and by the pain of the cross prepares for you the steps of ascent into his kingdom.”
We are so accustomed to making our own choices or even letting some other person make all of our decisions for us. That changes for the person awakened to the beauty and power of God’s word. Jesus is called the Word of God. Every time we open the book we can hear Him speaking. “This is My Beloved Son, Hear Him.” The beauty of the Lord is that today is the day, He is speaking now. Today if you hear His voice do not harden your heart, listen carefully to the Son of God.
