JESUS REVEALS HIMSELF IN THE BREAKING OF THE BREAD

Lk.24:30,31 – And it came about, when He had reclined at the table with them, that He took the bread and blessed it, and He broke it and began giving it to them. And then their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; and He vanished from their sight.

The braking of bread and the revelation of Christ is clearly seen throughout the scriptures. It comes from the first Passover meal when the Jewish people were liberated from Egypt. It was at a Passover meal the night before His crucifixion that Jesus broke bread with His disciples and told them “this is My body”. In today’s passage two of His disciples eyes began to be opened when they broke bread with Jesus. Many times we are far too much like these blind disciples, Jesus is all around us and walking with us and we can’t even see Him. How can we break bread so that we can see? Obviously when we take communion we look to Him in the breaking of the bread and we see Jesus. We can also see Him clearly when we look for Him in the scriptures, the word of God is that bread of life that nourishes our soul. Here is how Augustine describes this passage.

“He blessed the bread, broke it, and they recognized him. That’s how you recognize Christ—those of you who believe he is the Christ. But your graces should consider what all the disciples were like before the Lord’s resurrection. I beg their pardon for saying so, but they weren’t yet believers. They became great believers later on, but before that they were even inferior to us. We, I mean to say, believe that Christ has risen again, which they didn’t yet believe. But afterward they saw, they touched, they went over him with eyes and hands, and in that way they believed, and their hearts were given strength from the holy Scriptures. So they drank, they burst forth, and they filled us up too.”

So today break bread with Jesus. You can take a moment and have communion with yourself and the Lord or with your family, you will find Jesus meeting there with you. Also open up the Word of God and delight yourself in His word. He has set a table for you and always reveals Himself when we take time to stop and break bread.
