HEART TRANSPLANT

Matt. 12:35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things.

Before we came to Christ, all of our lives were consumed with the pursuit of the foolish pleasures of this world. As we drank from the cesspool of this world our hearts became more entrenched in its filth. Because of the condition of our heart we had no interest in spiritual things, our hearts had no interest in anything of a heavenly nature nature. Jeremiah talked about the deceitfulness and wickedness of man’s heart. If Jeremiah was right, what kind of hope do we have in this life? How can I bring good treasures out of my heart if my heart is deceitful and wicked? The only solution to our dilemma is that man is in need of a spiritual heart transplant. Jesus called it being born again. When that takes place, we have a whole new heart filled with amazing treasures to draw from. We are now filled with a new nature, the nature of Christ Himself that contains an endless supply of God’s life. We have an eternal supply of spiritual treasure to draw from. So true spirituality is all about the heart. Our affections, our joys, all of our desires are deeply rooted in our spirituality. Here is how Andrew Murray saw it.

“True religion is a thing of the heart, an inward life. It is only as the desire of the heart is fixed upon God, the whole heart seeking for God, giving its love and finding its joy in God, that a man can draw near to God. The heart of man was expressly planned and created and endowed with all its powers, that it might be capable of receiving and enjoying God and His love. God’s great quarrel with people is that their heart is turned from Him. In Hebrews 3 we heard Him complain of the hardening of the heart, the wandering heart, the unbelieving heart. No wonder that the first requisite for entering the Holiest of All should be a true heart. It is only with the heart that religion, that holiness, that the love and the will of God can be known. God can ask for nothing else and nothing less than the heart—-than a true heart.”

Murray shows us that this new heart has a new object of affection. Our heart becomes focused and passionately fixated on God Himself. He becomes our love, our life, and the source of our joy. Because God is a fountain of goodness and joy, our heart becomes engulfed in the life and joy of The Lord. How did this change come about? It was the spiritual heart transplant. When we called upon The Lord all things became new. We found ourselves living in a new world not because the world had changed or because our circumstances had changed. We had changed. That’s it ! Maybe you are waiting for your circumstances to change when that is not what is needed at all. Maybe a heart transplant is in order for you.
