Heb,1:4 – Being made so much better than the angels, as he hath by inheritance obtained a more excellent name than they.
This verse describes Jesus receiving His Name pointing to the authority, glory and power behind that Name displaying how Jesus is greater than the angels. The name of Jesus is the highest name in the universe. His Name carries His authority and power and every created being, including the angels are subject to that Name. Hebrews goes on to describe the significance of Christ being called the Son of God. He describes this in the following verses.
Heb.1:5 – “For unto which of the angels said he at any time, Thou art my Son, this day have I begotten thee? And again, I will be to him a Father, and he shall be to me a Son?”
The point that is being made is this, the angels are created, the Son is not created but is the eternally begotten Son. He carries the very nature and essence of the Father.
Next Hebrews makes the superiority of Christ very clear. He says in verse 6, “And again, when he bringeth in the first begotten into the world, he saith, And let all the angels of God worship him”. Angels are never intended to be worshipped, only the Lord God Himself is to receive our worship. Hebrews begins in these first few verses clearly unveiling Jesus as the Lord God.
As you read the rest of this chapter we are literally overwhelmed by the revelation of the deity of Christ. Read these verses carefully.
7. And of the angels he saith, Who maketh his angels spirits, and his ministers a flame of fire.
8. But unto the Son he saith, Thy throne, O God, is forever and ever: a scepter of righteousness is the scepter of thy kingdom.
9. Thou hast loved righteousness, and hated iniquity; therefore God, even thy God, hath anointed thee with the oil of gladness above thy fellows.
10. And, Thou, Lord, in the beginning hast laid the foundation of the earth; and the heavens are the works of thine hands:
11. They shall perish; but thou remainest; and they all shall wax old as doth a garment;
12. And as a vesture shalt thou fold them up, and they shall be changed: but thou art the same, and thy years shall not fail.
13. But to which of the angels said he at any time, Sit on my right hand, until I make thine enemies thy footstool?
This passage shows Christ seated on the throne ruling the Universe, receiving the heavenly anointing for His heavenly ministry, forming the universe with His hands, the mortal nature of creation and the eternal nature of Jesus the Lord, and finally all of His enemies defeated being brought literally under His feet. Christ is exalted above every name and He rules the Universe with His word.
