Ps.16:5 – The LORD is the portion of my inheritance and my cup;
You support my lot.

Have your ever thought about receiving some kind of unexpected inheritance? Come on now, surely you have imagined a long lost uncle who has left everything to you. Stories like that are the stories of fairy tales, you know, those too good to be true stories. But that is exactly what our heavenly inheritance is like. It is bigger than a fairy tale because it is infinite. Yes, infinite upon infinite. Have you realized your inheritance in Christ? Paul came out and said it in Ephesians 1:18, “I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened, so that you will know what is the hope of His calling, what are the riches of the glory of His inheritance in the saints”. This is better than a rich uncle or an anonymous benefactor. Our inheritance is God Himself. This is not only an enormous inheritance, it is also an eternal inheritance that will last forever and forever. Here is how David Clarkson describes Christ our portion and our inheritance.

“The Lord is the portion of mine inheritance.” If the Lord be thy portion, then thou mayest conclude, omnipotency is my portion, immensity, all-sufficiency, etc. The Lord is our portion, and this is incomparably more than if we had heaven and earth; for all the earth is but as a point compared with the vastness of the heavens, and the heavens themselves are but a point compared with God. What a large possession have we then! There is no confiscation of it, no banishment from it. Our portion fills heaven and earth, and is infinitely above heaven and below earth, and beyond both. Poor men boast and pride themselves of a kingdom, but we have more than all the kingdoms of the world and the glory thereof. Christ has given us more than the devil could offer him.”

This has the ring of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” where all of our secret dreams come true, and why not. If God is good and He has called us to be His children, our inheritance is better than that of kings. You may have not been born into a royal family, but in Christ we have been adopted into the Royal Family. God Himself is our portion, His amazing presence poured out. Now is just the guarantee of what is coming next.

    What a wonderful message. It gives me everlasting hope for eternity…not to mention today and tomorrow.
