Mk.13:33-37 – Watch out, stay alert; for you do not know when the appointed time is. It is like a man away on a journey, who upon leaving his house and putting his slaves in charge, assigning to each one his task, also commanded the doorkeeper to stay alert. Therefore, stay alert–for you do not know when the master of the house is coming, whether in the evening, at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning– so that he does not come suddenly and find you asleep. What I say to you I say to all: ‘Stay alert!’”

Talking too much about the Second Coming of Christ can be quite precarious. You will certainly be categorized as a fanatic or even a little bit off. Most folks buy into the idea that Christians have been saying that Jesus is coming soon for 2000 years and it has never happened. The one thing many people seem to forget is that the Lord is unaffected by time. He created time and lives outside of it. 2000 years is like the twinkling of an eye in His world. When you experience true spiritual renewal you will become suddenly aware of the nearness of His return. Jesus warned us to stay ready because His return would be sudden and entirely unexpected. Here is how Maclaren describes today’s passage:

“The picture in this word is that of a sleeping man rousing himself.….The apostles are thus compared with the doorkeepers; and the night season is in keeping with the figure. In the temple, during the night, the captain of the temple made his rounds, and the guards had to rise at his approach and salute him in a particular manner. Any guard found asleep on duty was beaten, or his garments were set on fire…..The preparations for the morning service required all to be early astir. The superintending priest might knock at the door at any moment. The Rabbis use almost the very words in which scripture describes the unexpected coming of the Master.”

A sense of the end of this age and the soon return of Christ is one of the things that attracted me to Christ. The more I looked to the Bible, the more His return became real to me. His return will come suddenly. Jesus said it would be unexpected like a thief in the night. Get ready, Jesus is coming soon.
