SIGNS, WONDERS, AND VARIOUS MIRACLES

Heb.2:4 – God also testifying with them, both by signs and wonders, and by various miracles and by gifts of the Holy Spirit according to His own will.

Miracles have been happening throughout the entire history of the church. In this passage Paul is reminding the church in Jerusalem about the supernatural history they have all experienced. From the ministry of Jesus, the Day of Pentecost, and through the years of the ministry of the apostles, God had spoken and confirmed the gospel message with signs and wonders. This passage is very descriptive in the original language. The word various in this passage is very interesting. Here is Vine’s definition of this word.

“Various – poikilos, denotes “particolored, variegated” (poikillo means “to make gay”), hence “divers,” (RV, “manifold”).”

Miracles are diverse or as the Greek implies, multi-colored. There are a great diversity of miracles from the new birth, deliverance from demons, healing from every kind of disease, deliverance from substance abuse and other addictions. Miracles have never passed away, they are actually surging in our generation.

The word miracle is also very interesting. Here is Vine’s definition of miracle.

“Miracles dunamis, “power, inherent ability,” is used of works of a supernatural origin and character, such as could not be produced by natural agents and means. It is translated “miracles” in the RV and KJV in Acts 8:13 – in Acts 2:22 (RV, “mighty works”); Heb. 2:4 (RV, “powers”). In Gal. 3:5, the word may be taken in its widest sense, to include “miracles” both physical and moral.”

Miracles come from the Greek word dunamis. Dunamis is the very miracle power of God. His miracle power is at work in us and through us. Miracles are definitely in the air today.

Finally there is the word gifts – merismos. Here again is Vine on this word.

“Gifts merismos, primarily denotes “a division, partition” (meros, “a part”); hence, (a) “a distribution,” Heb. 2:4, “gifts” (marg. of RV, “distributions”); (b) “a dividing or separation,” Heb. 4:12, “dividing” (KJV, “dividing asunder”).”

The Lord is distributing His miracle gifts all throughout His church. He actually has a variety of these gifts reserved to work through your life. How can this happen? It’s actually quite easy. Put your eyes on Jesus and worship Him. Fill your life with His mighty word. Drink Him in and then look for hurting people. The rest is left up to Him. You can watch and see Him break out in signs, wonders, and miracles.
