Matt.6:9 – Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.
I have been considering the Lord’s Prayer again recently. I love the simplicity and the power of this prayer. The first verse, ‘Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name’, is a great place to begin our day. Turning your attention to our Father, worshipping Him Just seems to sort everything out for me. I want to list a few observations that come to my mind as I reflect on the beginning of this incredible prayer.
I. Addressing God as Father reminds us of His unmistakeable love for His children. This love surrounds us everyday. Knowing Him as Father changes my perspective in life.
Gal.4:6,7 – Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave, but a son; and if a son, then an heir
II. When I “Hallow” God’s name I am recognizing His separation from all impurity. I am also acknowledging the goodness of His nature.
Matt.6;9 – Our Father in heaven,
Hallowed be Your name.
III. He is the Father in heaven, Creator of the universe. His power is on display in front of us every waking moment of our lives.
Ps.62:11 – God hath spoken once; twice have I heard this; that power belongs to God.
IV. Our Father in heaven is everywhere. His omnipresence is unique to Him. I am literally surrounded by the God of purity, love, and power.
Ps.139:8 – If I ascend to heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in Sheol, behold, You are there.
V. If He is my Father I am His son. What else needs to be said?
Gal.4:5,6 – so that He might redeem those who were under the Law, that we might receive the adoption as sons and daughters. Because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of His Son into our hearts, crying out, “Abba! Father!”
VI. His name refers to His very nature. He is absolutely holy. Those who have encountered Him speak and sing of His holiness.
Ps.103:1- Bless the LORD, my soul,
And all that is within me, bless His holy name.
VII. His name speaks to us of His blessing upon us. His name speaks of forgiveness, healing, provision, protection, guidance, transformation, and ever presence. Those who know His name are safe in His care.
Ps.91:14 – Because he has loved Me, I will save him;
I will set him securely on high, because he has known My name.
