Gen.2:23,24 – And Adam said, This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh: she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man. Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh.

Eph.5:30 – For we are members of His body, of His flesh and of His bones.

Adam’s connection to Eve is seen in today’s passages. Eve was taken out of Adam’s body and was literally Adam’s flesh and bones. Several thousand years later Paul takes this incredible union of intimacy and says it is speaking to us of the most intimate of all relationships, the relationship between Christ and the church. Marriage is the most intimate of all human relationships, two individuals literally become one person in holy matrimony. We see in this relationship shadows of two even more important relationships; the relationship of intimacy between a believer and Christ is the first one. The second is like it, the spiritual union of believers. The Bible clearly teaches that we become one body in Christ. Human marriage is a spiritual image of this union pointing to the intimacy of Christ and the church as well as the spiritual union of believers in Christ. Division in the body of Christ is no joke, it is deadly. This is what Paul spoke about in 1 Corinthians 11 when he described believers being sick and dying prematurely because of not discerning the body of Christ when taking communion. Division brings ramifications on believers and hinders the moving of the Holy Spirit. Here is how Jonathan Edwards described this unity in Christ.

“The people of Christ are united one to another. This is a consequence of their union with Christ: he is their head of union. Having all so near a relation to one head, they all are necessarily nearly related one to another; having all one Father, they consequently become one family and are brethren one to another. Having one spiritual husband to whom they are lawfully espoused, it follows that they all together constitute one spouse of Christ, and consequently must be members one of another, as the Apostle says.”

God’s plan is to display the glory of His Son in His church in today’s dark world.
Only God can make this happen, only a true move of the Spirit of God can bring us to the place of unity in Christ.
