Mk.6:41-43 – And taking the five loaves and two fish, He looked up to heaven and, praising God, gave thanks and broke the loaves and kept on giving them to the disciples to set before the people; and He [also] divided the two fish among [them] all. And they all ate and were satisfied. And they took up twelve [small hand] baskets full of broken pieces [from the loaves] and of the fish.
The simplicity and power of the miracle of the feeding of the multitudes never gets old. Jesus had spent a full day teaching the word of God to the crowds and healing the sick. It had been quite a day. When evening was drawing near no one had taken the time to prepare for the provisions necessary for this huge crowd. Obviously the day had not developed the way anyone in the crowd had expected. Teaching, worship, signs and wonders; time had escaped everyone as they all sensed they were in an historic moment. The disciples wanted to disperse the crowd so they could scatter to nearby villages to find some food. Jesus wasn’t having it, “You give them something to eat”, He said. None of the disciples said it out loud but the exchanged glances all confirmed what everyone was thinking, “You have got to be kidding! There is no possible way we can feed all these people”.
You know the rest of the story, after scrambling around Andrew came up with a little boy’s lunch, five small loaves of bread and two small fish. Whether as a joke or as a step of obedience and faith Andrew brought the lunch to Jesus. What did Jesus do? He took the food in His hands, looked up into heaven and blessed the food. The next part is what got my attention, He broke and kept giving pieces of bread to the disciples who in turn gave it to the crowd. Did you catch that miracle moment? The bread and fish multiplied as Jesus broke it and gave it out. This is the picture of our Christian faith and ministry. What we have in our hands never seems like enough, it multiplies as we begin to give it out by faith. This is the story of the church throughout the ages; He takes insignificant people and uses them and their limited resources to change the world. What should I do? Take whatever I have in my hands and give it to the Lord.

Every year about this time you break down this event spending a couple of weeks emphasizing different aspects. In all honesty, I find myself saying inwardly, why does he keep going over and over the accounts of this one day. So now I’m thinking I must be missing something, my pastor is relaying what is being emphasized by The Spirit and I and our local body have more to understand and put into practice. “What we have in our hands….. we begin to give it out by faith” “This is the story of the church throughout the ages” Empty handed, I am not, so I have something to give.
