Jn.6:26 – Jesus answered them and said, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate some of the loaves and were filled.
Jesus got to the very point of the miracle of the fish and the bread in His teaching in Capernaum the next day. He was asking them why are you seeking Me anyway? Is it just for the fish and bread? Maybe it was the miracles? He was telling them that there was something else He was trying to show them with all the miracles. He was saying to look to Him, the miracles are flowing from Him. Jesus Himself is the true treasure; not fish and bread or even the miracles of healing. The same could be said to us today, why are we seeking the Lord? What are our prayers all about? Here is how Augustine describes this passage.
“You seek me for something else, seek me for my own sake. For He insinuates the truth, that Himself is that meat: this shines out clearly in the sequel. “Which the Son of man will give you.” You did expect, I believe, again to eat bread, again to sit down, again to be gorged. But He had said, “Not the meat which perishes, but that which endures to eternal life,” in the same manner as it was said to that Samaritan woman: “If you knew who it is that asks of you drink, you would perhaps have asked of Him, and He would give you living water.” She said to Him, “Sir, You have no bucket and the well is deep; where then do You get this living water?” He answered the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who is saying to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water.”
So this teaching that Jesus gave at the synagogue in Capernaum marked the beginning of a change in the ministry of Jesus. He was telling them that He came to give more than a more comfortable or even a healthier life now, He came to give life, abundant life. He plainly said I am the bread of life, feast on Me and you will be totally satisfied. It is in seeking Me that you are made complete, you need Me more than My gifts.
The funny thing about all of this, when you begin to seek Him for His gifts and He shows up in your time of prayer, you will begin to understand that He is the source of all life.
