Haggai 2:6,7 – For thus says the LORD of hosts: Once more (it is a little while) I will shake heaven and earth, the sea and dry land; and I will shake all nations, and they shall come to the Desire of All Nations, and I will fill this temple with glory,’ says the LORD of hosts.
All of creation was waiting for the appearance of the Messiah just before Jesus was born. For the people of God there was no way of knowing that there would be two comings of the Lord. The first appearance could be compared to the lamb, Jesus appeared in humility as a child born in an animal’s feeding trough. Many missed His first appearance because of preconceived ideas of what His coming would be like. Only those with ears to hear and a hungry heart were able to recognize the One born in Bethlehem. Here are Henry’s thoughts on this passage.
“In these verses we have an intimation of the time of his coming, that it will not be long before he comes: “Yet once, it is a little while, and he will come. The Old Testament church has only one more stage, if we may express it in this way, to travel; five stages are now past, from Adam to Noah, Noah to Abraham, Abraham to Moses, Moses to Solomon’s temple, Solomon’s temple to the exile, and now one more stage, its sixth day’s journey, and then comes the Sabbath rest of the Messiah’s kingdom. When the Son of Man comes, let him find faith on earth, and let the children of the promise continue to look for him, for now it is but a little while and he will come. Hold out, faith and patience, for a while, for he that shall come will come, and will not tarry.” And just as he said then about his first appearance, so now he says about his second, Surely I come quickly.”
Haggai and the other prophets had spoken about His first appearance but the people’s hearts were closed and many missed their visitation. His second coming is rapidly approaching, the Lord is shaking the earth in preparation for that great day. We are currently in the Advent Season, waiting for Christmas Day to come. To those who have ears to hear another advent is rapidly approaching. This time the Lord will not come as a lamb but will come as the Lion of the tribe of Judah. This time Jesus will overthrow His enemies and begin His reign on earth. It is time for all of us to make room for Him and His soon return.
