SOS 3:3,4 – The watchmen who make the rounds in the city found me,
And I said, ‘Have you seen him whom my soul loves?’
Hardly had I left them
When I found him whom my soul loves;
I held on to him and would not let him go…
Have you seen Him whom my soul loves? This verse from Song of Solomon seems to be taken right from the lips of Mary Magdalene. She had a love for Christ second to none, after all she had nothing but shame and loneliness until the day that she met Christ. She never thought it would end this way, one day triumphant celebration in the streets of Jerusalem and then in just a few short days nailed to a cross and the lifeless body of Jesus left in a tomb. What made matters even worse was that morning when Mary went to the tomb the body was gone. Her heart was devastated, “Where have they taken Him? Where is the One whom my soul loves”.
Mary could not imagine going on in life without Jesus, what could she do now that He was gone? Here is how Matthew Henry describes this passage.
“Mary Magdalene sees angels in the grave, but that is not enough: she wants to see Jesus himself. Saw you him whom my soul loveth? This shows us that we must demonstrate the sincerity of our love to Christ by our concerned inquiries after him. The children of the bride-chamber will mourn when the bridegroom is taken away, especially for the sin that provoked him to withdraw, and if we so mourn, we will be concerned to recover the sense of his favor and be diligent and constant in using the proper means in order to do this. We must search the Scriptures, be devoted in prayer, keep close to his ordinances, and do all with this on our heart: Saw you him whom my soul loveth?. Only those who have themselves seen Christ are likely to direct others to a sight of him.”
For those who have met the Lord they know instantly what Mary was feeling. Anytime it seems that the Lord is nowhere to be found and your life is going sideways this is the cry that wells up inside of us, “Have you seen Him whom my soul loves?” This is the beauty of the Resurrection message, Jesus was there in the garden just outside the tomb. Mary called and Jesus answered. How did He answer her that day? The same way He always does, He called out “Mary”. That’s all it took, she heard His unmistakeable voice and immediately found herself standing in the garden with the Lord.

What a precious endearing message. I loved the first time I heard when Him called my name. He was always calling my name but the very first time I heard Him call me Jane my heart rejoiced.
I have imagined how ‘out of control’ Mary felt, they took away the only man who ever loved her? What did they do with His body? A million questions circling round in her head driving pain in her heart…until she heard Him. No need to explain things, just letting her know He was there was all she needed 🌷🌺🌼🌸🌻🌹 No one ever said her name the way He did 🌈🌈🌈
Absolutely love this Pastor Frank!
My heart leaps!
Happy Resurrection Day to yall!
Ooh yes, oh how I love those garden moments in His presence. I withdraw there often to be refreshed in the beauty of His garden. Just to sit at His feet to hear His teaching, and to listen as He prays for us. The fragrance of life all around. The aroma of fresh olives pressed out, the oil dripping upon the heads of all those gathered to seek Him. I cling to His feet not wishing Him to depart, but He bids me Go and He reminds me I’ll find Him in the same place tomorrow.
