Lk.24:36-42 – Now while they were telling these things, Jesus Himself suddenly stood in their midst and *said to them, “Peace be to you.” But they were startled and frightened, and thought that they were looking at a spirit. And He said to them, “Why are you frightened, and why are doubts arising in your hearts? See My hands and My feet, that it is I Myself; touch Me and see, because a spirit does not have flesh and bones as you plainly see that I have.” And when He had said this, He showed them His hands and His feet. While they still could not believe it because of their joy and astonishment, He said to them, “Have you anything here to eat?” They served Him a piece of broiled fish; and He took it and ate it in front of them.

This passage in Luke clearly gives proof for the bodily resurrection of Jesus and begins to point the way to His heavenly ministry. When Jesus showed His wounded hands and feet to the disciples He was pointing to the very core of redemption. Christ suffered and died as our substitute so that we could have access to God.
His bodily resurrection pointed to the heavenly ministry of Jesus. Luke goes on to describe the physical ascension of Christ into heaven in this passage. He is now at the Father’s right hand where He serves as our Advocate and our Heavenly Intercessor. As our Advocate we confess our sins to Him and we are forgiven, as our Intercessor He lives to continually pray for us to the Father. When Jesus entered into heaven He became the first man to gain the privelege of access to God. Paul called Him a forerunner who became our anchor of hope that entered behind the veil, this is now our eternal inheritance.
Jesus was also displaying to the disciples the power of the resurrection. That same power raised us up from our spiritual death so that we can live our lives by the power of God.
Next, the Lord said that they were witnesses of all these things so that they could proclaim with authority the message of the cross and the resurrection bringing the message of forgiveness of sins to the whole world.
Finally Jesus told them the secret to the success of their supernatural mission, they were to wait in Jerusalem until they were clothed with power from on high. Jesus was about to ascend into heaven where He would fulfill the purpose of His humanity, that all mankind could be filled and empowered by the Spirit of God.
