ALL SPIRITUAL BLESSINGS

Eph.1:3,4 – Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ, just as He chose us in Him before the foundation of the world, that we would be holy and blameless before Him.

This passage contain Paul’s opening comments to one of his most spiritual masterpieces, the letter to the church in Ephesus. Paul uses a phrase here that immediately sets the stage for what this letter is all about, ‘all spiritual blessings’. A.B. Simpson said this could be translated ‘all the blessings of the Spirit’ which possibly brings a clearer perception of what Paul is describing. This letter begins to unfold for the Christian all the blessings and benefits for a Christian related to the person of the Holy Spirit which is our inheritance in Christ. Everything we need and everything our heart longs for is satisfied in the blessings that flow to us from the Spirit of God. Here is how Matthew Henry describes this Passage.

“All blessings come from God as the Father of our LORD Jesus Christ. He hath blessed us with all spiritual blessings. Spiritual blessings are the best blessings. He blesses us by giving us things that make us truly blessed. We cannot bless God in the same way in response, but we can bless him by praising. Those whom God blesses with some spiritual blessings he blesses with all spiritual blessings, though it is not so with temporal blessings. These blessings are spiritual blessings in heavenly places. Or it may read “in heavenly things,” referring to things that come from heaven and are intended to prepare people for it. We should learn from this to be concerned for spiritual and heavenly blessings as the best blessings, with which we cannot be miserable and without which we must be.”

Think about it like this, the Holy Spirit, access to the Spirit and all that entails was purchased for us at the cross. We were separated from God without a prayer to fix our condition and Jesus purchased us with His blood and filled us with His presence. Now we are in the family of God and enjoy the immediate presence and power of God. He is in us, around us, and equipping us in a real way for all of life’s challenges. We have received all of the blessings of the Spirit, that is where real life begins.
