Ps.71:3 – Be to me a rock of dwelling to which I may continually come;
You have given the commandment to save me,
For You are my rock and my fortress.
This verse describes for us one of the amazing characteristics of God’s anointing that was on David’s life. This presence gave David supernatural military skills to conquer his enemies as well as the ability to write songs that we still find comfort in today. In this passage we see another attribute of the anointing, it was David’s dwelling place, he made his home in God. Jesus described this in His famous teaching on the Holy Spirit describing the Lord as our dwelling place. Here is how Jesus described it, Jn.14:20 – “In that day you will know that I am in My Father, and you in Me, and I in you”. Spurgeon also described this amazing spiritual blessing in his comments on today’s verse.
“Be thou my strong habitation. Permit me to enter into thee, and be as much at home as a man in his own house, and then suffer me to remain in thee as my settled abode. Whereas foes molest me, I need a dwelling framed and bulwarked, to sustain a siege and resist the attacks of armies; let, then, thine omnipotence secure me, and be as a fortress unto me. Here we see a weak man, but he is in a strong habitation; his security rests upon the tower in which he hides, and is not placed in jeopardy through his personal feebleness. Whereunto I may continually resort. Fast shut is this castle against all adversaries, its gates they cannot burst open; the drawbridge is up, the portcullis is down, the bars are fast in their places; but, there is a secret door, by which friends of the great Lord can enter at all hours of the day or night, as often as ever they please.”
Obviously as a Christian we still face every kind of difficulty imaginable. Regardless of what kind of life struggle you are dealing with today the Holy Spirit gives us a place of safety, He actually becomes our dwelling place. This is what Jesus was describing that night to His disciples as He taught them about the Holy Spirit. “I am going away”, He said, “to prepare a dwelling place for you”. He was not just talking about heaven but access to God’s presence right here and now. He was preparing a spiritual home, a place of protection from all of life’s challenges.
