THE FATHER’S BREAD

Jn.6:43-48 – Jesus therefore answered and said to them, “Do not murmur among yourselves. No one can come to Me unless the Father who sent Me draws him; and I will raise him up at the last day. It is written in the prophets, ‘And they shall all be taught by God.’ Therefore everyone who has heard and learned from the Father comes to Me. Not that anyone has seen the Father, except He who is from God; He has seen the Father. Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life. I am the bread of life.

God’s genius is revealed in so many ways all around us everyday. A good example of this is the way He has designed us so that we are attracted to food. If food didn’t interest us we would never get the nourishment we needed eating only as a necessity rather than strictly for pleasure. The funny thing is, God has made food to taste good and we eat it because we like it. Now here is where God’s creativity is over the top, Jesus is the the Father’s bread from heaven and He calls Himself the true bread. The way the Lord draws us unto Himself is by creating in us a hunger for spiritual food. Many people wander aimlessly all of their lives never hungering for the Father’s bread from heaven until the day grace awakens us and fills us with a hunger for God. Here is how Augustine describes this.

”As if to say, I know why you do not hunger after this bread and so cannot understand it and do not seek it.… “No one can come to me unless the Father who has sent me draws him.” This is the doctrine of grace: none comes unless they are drawn. But whom the Father draws, and whom not, and why he draws one and not another, do not presume to decide if you want to avoid falling into error. Take the doctrine as it is given to you: and, if you are not drawn, pray that you may be.”

All of us spent our old life eating garbage because we had no taste for the Bread from heaven. What changed? Grace came and awakened our hunger, now we are hungry for God and have lost our taste for the food of this world. This was the true message that day that He multiplied the fish and bread. Jesus was announcing that He is the Father’s bread.

  1. More times than not my pastor, this blog resonates with me. It keeps me in tune with the melody going through the local body He has placed me into. Often times even hitting on the same subject mingling through my thoughts. Mornings like today, where I’m somehow graciously undistracted and have a healthy hunger, I want and seek more. Although I read this secondarily to The Word, it has the taste of an appetizer. Thank you.
