Ps.31:19 – How great is Your goodness,
Which You have stored up for those who fear You,
Which You have wrought for those who take refuge in You,
Before the sons of men!
If you are in Christ then you are far richer than you realize. He has blessed you with every spiritual blessing in Christ. Some of these blessings are on full display in our lives today, others are stored up for our eternal inheritance which we will explore and enjoy forever. What we have known of His goodness in this life is not even a drop in comparison to the riches of His glory that will be put on full display in the ages to come. Here is how Spurgeon describes this verse.
“In the treasury of the covenant, in the field of redemption, in the caskets of the promises, in the granaries of providence, the Lord has provided for all the needs which can possibly occur to his chosen. We ought often to consider the laid up goodness of God which has not yet been distributed to the chosen, but is already provided for them: if we are much in such contemplations, we shall be led to feel devout gratitude, such as glowed in the heart of David. Which thou hast wrought for them that trust in thee before the sons of men. Heavenly mercy is not all hidden in the storehouse; in a thousand ways it has already revealed itself on behalf of those who are bold to avow their confidence in God; before their fellow men this goodness of the Lord has been displayed, that a faithless generation might stand rebuked. Overwhelming are the proofs of the Lord’s favor to believers, history teems with amazing instances, and our own lives are full of prodigies of grace.”
Notice these phrases in Spurgeon’s quote; first, in the treasury of the covenant. This new and better covenant is loaded with the blessings of God. He has given us a new nature, written His word on our heart, given us access into His presence, and filled us with His presence. In the field of redemption we see that we were once slaves and now we are sons, we were dominated by our sinful nature but now we are free, we had the sentence of death on us but now we have received eternal life. In the caskets of promises we see the treasures of God. Spurgeon used the word casket to mean a treasure chest which is loaded with priceless promises from God. These promises are for our household to be saved, provision from his hand, and for Him to keep us all of our lives. Finally Spurgeon mentions the granaries of providence. The sovereignty of God is like a granary because it carries the supplies of God for us all throughout our lives. This reminds us of the granaries of Joseph that carried God’s supply in the lean times. His goodness is passed finding out and is waiting for you to draw from it.
