Jn.6:19-21 – Then, when they had rowed about three or four miles, they *saw Jesus walking on the sea and drawing near to the boat; and they were frightened. But He *said to them, “It is I; do not be afraid.” So they were willing to receive Him into the boat, and immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.
Today had been a day of miracles like nothing that had ever been seen before. The day started with probably hundreds of people being healed, possibly more healings than the disciples had ever witnessed before. This was followed by the multiplication of the fish and bread, thousands fed from a little boy’s lunch. Next we see Jesus walking on the water, again nothing like this had ever been heard of before. After this we see the storm stilled, even the storms are subject to His voice. The next miracle again was unprecedented, the boat and all the disciples were suddenly on the beach across the lake. This had never been done before but this miracle was on the list of what happened that day, a day that would never be forgotten. Here is how Cajetan described this miracle of transportation.
“The Evangelist does not explicitly state that Jesus did not enter the boat, but he states that they wanted to receive him into the boat, indicating that the disciples were thinking that they would make their journey into port in the usual manner, and thus they wanted to receive him into the boat. But because they were mistaken in their supposition of the usual journey, a denial is added, not of Jesus entering the boat, but a denial of the usual course of the journey. And thus we read, “And immediately the boat was at the land to which they were going.” . . . The Evangelist made use of this way of speaking in order for us to understand that in addition to the miracles recounted by the other Evangelists, this miracle also took place, . . . and for us to understand that Jesus did not enter the boat for the purpose of the usual journey for which they wanted to receive him into the boat.”
I guess if you were to take the disciples and plop them down in our world of 2024 they would think all of our transportation as pretty supernatural. Power boats instead of sails, cars rather than walking, airplanes flying intercontinental routes, and motorcycles instead of a horse or donkey. But that’s not the point here, Jesus showed the disciples His authority over all things and His ability to advance His kingdom no matter what obstacles get in the way.
