Ps.136:1 – Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.
Thanksgiving is the byproduct of revelation, one glimpse of His goodness and thanksgiving is our response. All of us understand His temporal blessings that He loads on us everyday, we all live from His hand each and every moment of our lives. But more than the temporal blessings is the incredible blessing of tasting the goodness of God Himself. If you don’t quite understand what I am saying maybe its because you have not yet tasted the goodness of God for yourself. He is goodness itself and the unveiling of His presence when we gather together in the house of God is nothing less than the unveiling of His goodness. Here is how Charles Spurgeon describes the goodness of the Lord.
“The exhortation is intensely earnest: the Psalmist pleads with the Lord’s people with an “Oh”, three times repeated. Thanks are the least that we can offer, and these we ought freely to give. The inspired writer calls us to praise Jehovah for all his goodness to us, and all the greatness of his power in blessing his chosen. We thank our parents, let us praise our heavenly Father; we are grateful to our benefactors, let us give thanks unto the Giver of all good. For he is good. Essentially he is goodness itself, practically all that he does is good, relatively he is good to his creatures. Let us thank him that we have seen, proved, and tasted that he is good. He is good beyond all others: indeed, he alone is good in the highest sense; he is the source of good, the good of all good, the sustainer of good, the perfecter of good, and the rewarder of good. For this he deserves the constant gratitude of his people.”
So Thanksgiving Day is drawing close and our plans are being made. The menus are all in place and everyone waits in expectancy for the great meal. But before we carve the turkey or dig into the tasty deserts maybe we should stop for a moment and give thanks to the Lord. David himself said it like this, “taste and see that the Lord is good”. One taste of His goodness and you will be hooked like David was. What comes next is worship and adoration, “Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever”.
