Lk.7:14,15 – Then He came and touched the open coffin, and those who carried him stood still. And He said, “Young man, I say to you, arise.” So he who was dead sat up and began to speak. And He presented him to his mother.
This has to be one of the greatest miracles in the ministry of Jesus rivaled only by Jairus’s daughter and Lazarus himself. This young man who was already dead and being carried to the grave by a funeral procession had a grand interruption, you could say it was an interruption of life. Jesus awakened this young man from his sleep of death, he sat up and immediately began to speak. I wonder what he had to say that fine day? Was it things like where am I and where did Abraham and all of our ancestors go? He was taken from the region of the dead back into his mother’s arms. No one had ever seen anything quite like this. The whole town was probably there for that miracle and it would be their topic of conversation for years to come. Here is a short quote from Matthew Henry followed by one by MacLaren about this miracle.
“He that was dead sat up. Have we received grace from Christ? Let us show it. Another sign of life was that he began to speak, because whenever Christ gives us spiritual life, he opens the lips in prayer and praise (Ps 51:15).”
“Brethren, that Voice that raised one poor bewildered boy to sit up on his bier, and begin to speak—broken exclamations possibly, and stammering words of astonishment—shall be flung, like a trumpet that scatters marvelous sounds, through the sepulchers of the nations and compel all to stand before the throne. You and I will hear it; let us be ready for it.”
Maybe your voice has been silenced by the world of death all around you. Fear and unbelief have a tendency to shut us up until we are awakened from our death and join the ranks of other dead men talking. When Jesus puts His hand on your casket something has to give and I promise you you are going to tell somebody what happened to you. The young man from Nain is probably still talking about his miracle, and why not? By now he has experienced death twice and is more alive than ever.
