THE VOICE OF GOD

Luke 7:14,15 – TPT – Then he stepped up to the coffin and touched it. When the pallbearers came to a halt, Jesus said to the corpse, “Young man, I say to you, arise and live!” Immediately, the young man moved, sat up, and spoke to those nearby. Jesus presented the son to his mother, alive!

Jesus is often called the Word of God. As the temple guards proclaimed, “No one ever spoke like this man”. His words carry an irony within themselves, they are permeated with kindness but at the same time resounding with authority and power. It was the voice of the Lord that brought everything that is into existence; according to the Apostle Paul it is the same voice that holds all creation together. By His word everything is formed and and by His word everything is carried along to fulfillment. In today’s passage Jesus of Nazareth speaks to the boy lying in his coffin, the boy immediately sat up and began to speak. Death had given way to life, the Lord of the whole earth had spoken. Here is how John Calvin describes this passage.

Young man, I say to thee. By this word Christ proved the truth of the saying of Paul, that God calleth those things which are not as , they were, (Romans 4:17.) He addresses the dead man, and makes himself be heard, so that death is suddenly changed into life. We have here, in the first place, a striking emblem of the future resurrection, as Ezekiel is commanded to say, O ye dry bones, hear the word of the Lord, (37:4.) Secondly, we are taught in what manner Christ quickens us spiritually by faith. It is when he infuses into his word a secret power, so that it enters into dead souls, as he himself declares,

The hour cometh, when the dead shall hear the voice of

the Son of God, and they who hear shall live, (John 5:25.)”

Calvin’s explanation is permeated with the word of God. That would be a good decision for all of us to make, declare His word in every part of our lives and also in the world we live in. Death always gives way to the power and authority of the word of God. Maybe you feel like that dead man in today’s story, read God’s word and as you do the Lord Himself will be speaking over you.
