Lk.7:37 – In the neighborhood there was an immoral woman of the streets, known to all to be a prostitute. When she heard about Jesus being in Simon’s house, she took an exquisite flask made from alabaster, filled it with the most expensive perfume, went right into the home of the Jewish religious leader, and knelt at the feet of Jesus in front of all the guests.
Every year at Palm Sunday I try to imagine the different people who were following Jesus as He made His triumphal entry into Jerusalem. The woman in today’s verse had to be one of the least likely to put herself in this position. After all, she had lived a life in darkness not wanting anyone to cast their gaze upon her and to examine the life she had lived. All of that was different now, her sins had been forgiven and she was no longer living in the darkness. She didn’t hesitate that day as the followers of Jesus were all joining together for this celebration as the Lord made His last trip to Jerusalem before He would die. Of course none of His followers had realized the fact that Jesus would be condemned to die. In their world, how could anyone kill their Lord, they had all seen way to much to accept that.
So now, this woman of the night was in the blazing light of God’s glory, celebrating with all the others who were following Jesus. By now there was quite a collection of people with a questionable past following Him down the road. There were crooked tax collectors, common thieves, political activists, and possibly a murderer or two. The one thing they all had in common was that their sins were forgiven and they could never go back to that other life. As they celebrated on that great day the whole city was being effected, this former sinners were all well known and their testimonies were effecting all of Jerusalem. This is why Jesus came, He died to save sinners. Even though none of these redeemed in the great celebration that day had quite understood where all of this was headed, they all knew that Jesus had touched their lives. Jesus would be crucified just several days later, of course this was marking the beginning of sinners being set free. The testimony of those walking with Jesus that day was about to change the world.
