PALM SUNDAY CELEBRATION

Lk.19:37 – As soon as he got to the bottom of the Mount of Olives, the crowds of his followers shouted with a loud outburst of ecstatic joy over all the mighty wonders of power they had witnessed.

The triumphal entry of Christ into Jerusalem begins to bring into focus why Jesus came to the earth, He came to glorify God through His life, ministry and death putting redemption of fallen man on full display. His Victory Parade included miracles from throughout His ministry. Possibly the first in line was His most recent miracle, the blind man from Jericho may have been leading this parade, and why not? He wanted everyone to see what the Lord had done for Him. Here is how Matthew Henry followed by the pillar Commentary describe this scene.

Henry

“Christ’s triumphs are the matter of his disciples’ praises. When Christ came near Jerusalem, God suddenly put it into the hearts of a whole multitude of the disciples, not only of the Twelve, to rejoice and praise God and to spread their clothes in the way, which was a common expression of joy. Notice: What was the cause or occasion of their joy and praise. They praised God for all the mighty works they had seen, especially the raising of Lazarus, which is mentioned specifically in John’s account of the same events.”

Pillar

“The blind man of Jericho at the beginning of this unit and the crowd at its end both “glorify and praise God.” That God is praised for what Jesus does shows the degree to which the crowd associates the person and work of Jesus with the mission of God. “Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord!”, shout the crowds.”

This public celebration brought the conflict of the life and ministry of Jesus to a head. What He had done over the last three years was being put on full display in the streets of Jerusalem. How does this scene apply to our world today? You and I are now front and center in the Lord’s parade of victory. He wants everyone to see the glorious work He has done in your life. It’s not okay to slip away into the crowd of onlookers, we are to be the focus of attention in the last days of this age. Now of course this parade is not about you and your accomplishments, its all about what the Lord has done in your life. That’s how it always is, He gets the glory and we get to celebrate.
