GOD SPEAKS FROM HIS WRITTEN WORD

Heb.4:12 – For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.

Recently I had quite an unusual experience on a Sunday morning just before our morning service was to begin. As usual, I had spent the week preparing for my Sunday morning message and was at my desk at the church praying and pondering my message for that morning when something unusual happened. My eyes fell upon my Bible that I purchased in 1973, just a couple of months after my conversion. It was as if this Bible was talking to me as I sat there. In those moments I was caught up in the times in those early years where the Lord met me in so many different situations.

I remembered God speaking to me about the nearness of His coming, about the importance of winning souls, about making my calling and election sure, and even God’s calling on my life to become a missionary to New Orleans. God’s word is alive and He is always speaking. Check out these comments from the Christ Centered Expository Commentary.

“The author establishes two characteristics about the Word of God in verse 12. First, the Word of God is “living and effective.” This highlights the enduring vitality of Scripture. Since God is the author of Scripture, it is not a dead book. As God lives, Scripture lives. Furthermore, as we see throughout Scripture, when God speaks, God acts. This is what is meant by the adjective effective. For example, God created the heavens and the earth with his word. Thus, Scripture, because it is God’s Word, is alive and life giving. The Bible is not a bunch of dead, lifeless words. It is the living Word of God. It accomplishes everything God wills. As the Lord says through the prophet Isaiah, “so my word that comes from my mouth will not return to me empty, but it will accomplish what I please and will prosper in what I send it to do” .”

So what happened in the service that morning? I picked up my old Bible and let Jesus do the talking. I shared some of the special moments the Lord met me from the pages of that old book. Sharing what God has spoken to you has the smell of authenticity on it, at the end of the day that is what we are all looking for.
