Heb.11:8 – By faith Abraham, when he was called, obeyed by going out to a place which he was to receive for an inheritance; and he went out, not knowing where he was going.
Abraham was raised in a pagan land among idol worshippers until he had an encounter with the living God. The Lord told Abraham several things in this first encounter. First He said to leave his home and all his relationships and move to an unknown foreign land. He told him he would give this land to him and his seed forever. He went on to tell Abraham that his seed would be like the stars of the sky and that the whole world would be blessed through Abraham. These promises seemed preposterous but Abraham believed God and lived off of this word for the rest of his life. Here is how Martin Luther describes this.
“[Abraham] went out with no knowledge of where he was going, with nothing for him to follow except the Word of God concerning things that were nowhere to be seen. For just as for us the place where Enoch and Elijah are is situated in darkness, in gloom, in ignorance, and in the invisible things of God, so to Abraham this place to which he was called was completely hidden. And this is the glory of faith, namely, not to know where you are going, what you are doing, what you are suffering, and, after taking everything captive—perception and understanding, strength and will—to follow the bare voice of God and to be led and driven rather than to drive. And thus it is clear that with this obedience of faith Abraham gave a supreme example of an evangelical life, because he left everything, and loving it above everything, he was a stranger of his own accord and was subjected every hour to danger of life and death.”
Abraham is called the father of faith. What does that exactly mean? Abraham received a prophetic word from the Lord and acted on that word and then proceeded to live off of that word for the rest of his life. So how does that relate to you and me in our modern world? Today you and I have access to the written word of God which is truly alive. As we search the scriptures the Lord will speak personally and directly to us. This is a word of prophesy similar to what Abraham received so many years ago. So search your heart today, be honest with yourself; are you living on a word from God? I think it is time for each of us to seek the Lord and find guidance from His word, we can then walk in faith like Abraham and influence our world for the Lord.

“to follow the bare voice of God and to be led and driven rather than to drive.” It happened just the other day, a simple small word or what most would call a thought. “Do this” Who could not say that at times we have all brushed off a “Do this”, we let reasoning dispel it as coincidence rather than an opportunity to do our Father’s will. Just as Jesus was all about His Father’s directives, what is our purpose, our direction, when we remain the driver?
